I would loved to have joined for the meeting, but unfortunately I’m at an all day workshop in Brussels and I suspect we’ll go on past 9am MDT! I’d be interested to hear back afterwards though if there are notes or a recording

A bit tangential, but a nice blog post by Anil Dash on standards and interoperability (in the internets).

Is a great reference on the benefits of ABI compatibility, and the effort involved in attaining it.

Meeting notes

12 participants.

@gregtucker reminded us of the BMI governance document, emphasizing how we can move forward with consensus.

Scott Peckham presented his work on the concept of variable roles in BMI. This addition to BMI was proposed to address how models in the NOAA NextGen framework could be serialized and checkpointed.

Scott’s presentation spawned a lively discussion on what would constitute an extension to BMI. (See the working document in this post.)

@gregtucker brought the discussion back to what should be in BMI v3.0. It was nicely summarized by @Nels:

Getting mechanics for supporting generic extensions first would allow some significant compatibility and room to explore

To this end, @Nels and @PhilMiller volunteered to start scoping out a technical specification for BMI extensions. They’ll present their work at the next meeting.

The next BMI Council meeting will be in August.
